Ouistreham

Camping Les Peupliers is only 15 minutes from Ouistreham. The town is often called the pearl of the Côte de Nacre. On a camping holiday near Ouistreham you can’t miss the huge sandy beaches and the small fishing port where a daily fish market is held. You can’t miss the fish market with its wave-shaped architecture. About 25 fishing houses offer you their best fish and seafood. The main street of the town is also very pleasant in season for a stroll, shopping or finding a good little restaurant to eat in with family or friends.

The English know Ouistreham well. Indeed, Brittany Ferries has a regular service between the town and Portsmouth. 3 departures a day for a crossing time of just over 5 hours during the day and 7 hours at night.

The Lighthouse

Always wanted to see the inside of a lighthouse? Now is the time! The Ouistreham Lighthouse welcomes you from the top of its 38 metres. Take your courage in both hands to climb the 171 steps of the spiral staircase of the lighthouse and you will discover a 360° view on the town and the sea.

The Pointe du siège and the Orne estuary

Ouistreham is the ideal place for a nature holiday to discover the fauna and the Normandy drill. The natural site of the Orne estuary is a privileged shelter for nearly 300 species. Discover the dunes and the wild beach. Covering 350 hectares, it is a first-rate ornithological reserve where you can also sometimes see seals.

Sword Beach

But Ouistreham is also the famous Sword Beach where French commandos fought during the D-Day landings on 6 June 1944. The film “The Longest Day” rightly highlights the famous Kieffer commando and the 1st Marine Battalion. The Green Berets advanced towards Pegasus Bridge at Bénouville. Only 24 of the 177 soldiers completed the French campaign. The N°4 Commando Museum in Ouistreham pays a beautiful tribute to these men.

You can also visit the Atlantic Wall Museum. You can’t help but be impressed by the last visible remnant of the most powerful coastal battery on the coast.  The ‘Great Bunker’ is spread over 6 levels and gives a vivid picture of what the combatants on both sides experienced. At the entrance to the Great Bunker you can see one of the famous landing craft.
